A soldier from the Irish Defence Force (IDF) (2nd from right) and a soldier from the 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment work side by side training Mali troops in Africa, as part of the European Union Training Mission.
The British element of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) consists of 39 personnel from the 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment, the Irish Defence Force (IDF) and the Royal Marines.
Based at Koulikoro Training Camp, 60km North of Bamako, their mission was to train members of the Mali Army in basic infantry and mortar skills. The mission launched on the 18th February 2013 and will last 15 months. In that time 4 Malian Battalions will be trained, each approximately 700 strong.
The deployment marks a historic moment as it is the first time since World War I that members of the IDF have formally been under British Command.
